Legacy of the Soil: Sustainable Agriculture and Safe Food (Project No: 2024-3-ES02-KA153-YOU-000260774) is an Erasmus+ Mobility of Youth Workers project coordinated by Generaciones Saludables España and implemented in Gijón, Spain between 28 April – 5 May 2025. The project brought together participants from Turkey, Spain, Hungary, Poland, and Iceland to strengthen the capacities of youth workers in sustainable agriculture, food safety, healthy nutrition, and climate-conscious living. Through practical workshops, interactive learning methods, and intercultural cooperation, participants explored innovative ways to promote environmentally responsible food systems within their communities.

A major focus of the activities was the relationship between climate change, agriculture, and healthy nutrition. Participants examined how environmental degradation, intensive farming practices, and excessive pesticide use directly affect soil quality, food production, and human health. They also explored the principles of the climatarian diet, discovering how choosing local and seasonal food, reducing food waste, and making conscious consumption choices can significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions while supporting healthier lifestyles. These discussions encouraged participants to view everyday eating habits as powerful tools for climate action.

The project combined theory with hands-on experience to demonstrate sustainable agricultural practices. Interactive sessions introduced participants to the principles of organic farming, emphasizing production methods that protect biodiversity, preserve soil fertility, and eliminate harmful synthetic chemicals. Practical workshops allowed participants to create seed balls for ecological planting initiatives, providing them with simple yet effective techniques to encourage reforestation and biodiversity in different environments. These activities strengthened both environmental awareness and participants' confidence in applying sustainable agricultural practices in their own countries.

Another important learning experience centered on food production and cultural heritage. Through an international bread-making workshop, participants explored the historical and cultural importance of traditional bread while preparing authentic recipes from different participating countries using natural ingredients. Beyond developing practical culinary skills, the activity highlighted the value of homemade food, sustainable consumption, food-sharing traditions, and reducing dependence on heavily processed products. By exchanging recipes, techniques, and stories, participants discovered how local food traditions can contribute to healthier communities and stronger intercultural understanding.

The project also emphasized active lifestyles, environmental responsibility, and international collaboration. Sustainable cycling activities demonstrated environmentally friendly transportation alternatives while promoting physical well-being and reducing carbon emissions. Creative communication tasks, collaborative poster design, reflection sessions, and intercultural evenings enabled participants to strengthen teamwork, critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills. By integrating practical learning with cultural exchange, Legacy of the Soil equipped youth workers with valuable knowledge, innovative educational methods, and sustainable practices that they can transfer into future youth projects and local initiatives promoting safe food, healthy living, and environmental sustainability.
