In today’s world, technology has become an inseparable part of our daily lives. Smartphones, social media, and digital platforms provide quick access to information and shape our routines. However, uncontrolled and excessive use of technology can lead to serious physical, mental, and social issues, especially among young people. This makes raising awareness about technology addiction and promoting healthy digital habits more important than ever.

The Impact on Mental and Physical Health

Excessive screen time can cause attention disorders, sleep disturbances, and increased stress levels. Digital addiction weakens social interactions and reduces physical activity, leading to an unhealthy lifestyle. For young people, learning how to manage these negative effects early on is essential for maintaining long-term mental and physical well-being.

Strengthening Social Connections

Although technology facilitates communication, it can replace face-to-face interactions, leading to social isolation. Friendships and family bonds may weaken, and social skills such as empathy and effective communication can suffer. Encouraging young people to balance technology use with real-life interactions is key to fostering meaningful relationships and emotional well-being.

Media Literacy and Conscious Digital Consumption

While digital media is a powerful tool for spreading information, it is also filled with misleading content. Young people, in particular, may struggle to differentiate between reliable and false information. Developing critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze digital content is crucial for becoming informed and responsible media consumers.

Building Healthy Digital Habits for the Future

Addressing technology addiction is not just an individual concern—it is a societal issue. Educating young people on mindful technology use helps them grow into more productive, healthy, and well-balanced individuals. Initiatives like Generaciones Saludables España’s Erasmus+ project play a vital role in guiding young people toward a more conscious digital lifestyle.

Between July 27 and August 2, 2024, in Gijón, Spain, this project brought together 40 young participants from across Europe (Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Turkey) to explore the issue of technology addiction. Through workshops, interactive activities, and community engagement, participants developed strategies to manage screen time, improve media literacy, and strengthen real-world connections.

Technology will always be a part of our lives, but learning how to use it responsibly is in our hands. This is why projects like this one are crucial for raising awareness, equipping young people with essential digital habits, and building a healthier, more mindful society for the future.
