The United Colors for an Inclusive Future Youth Exchange, held in Gijón, Spain, brought together young people from Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Türkiye, Georgia, and Hungary to promote inclusion, empathy, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Through a series of educational and experiential activities, participants gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and explored ways to contribute to a more inclusive society.
One of the key activities, “Limitless Journey,” focused on inspiring participants through the stories and achievements of successful people with disabilities. By listening to real-life experiences, participants discovered how determination, resilience, and self-confidence can help overcome obstacles. These personal stories encouraged young people to challenge stereotypes, rethink their perceptions of disability, and recognize the valuable contributions that people with disabilities make to society.
Awareness-raising and dissemination activities provided participants with the opportunity to engage directly with the local community. Through the distribution of informational materials and positive messages promoting inclusion and equal rights, young people helped increase public awareness about disability issues. At the same time, they learned more about the role of volunteering and Erasmus+ projects in creating social change and strengthening active citizenship.
Empathy-based activities became one of the most impactful learning experiences of the programme. Participants experienced everyday situations while blindfolded, navigated spaces using mobility aids, and explored challenges similar to those faced by wheelchair users. These practical exercises allowed them to better understand accessibility barriers and the importance of creating environments where everyone can participate equally. The activities transformed theoretical knowledge into personal experience, making the learning process more meaningful and memorable.
The Hungarian Cultural Night enriched the intercultural dimension of the project by introducing participants to Hungary’s history, traditions, culture, and social realities. Through presentations, traditional dances, music, food, and cultural exchanges, participants gained a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. The evening encouraged mutual respect, intercultural dialogue, and stronger connections among young people from different countries.
Daily evaluation sessions provided participants with the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, share their opinions, and assess the learning outcomes of the activities. Through open discussions and group feedback, participants strengthened their critical thinking, communication, and self-expression skills. The reflections helped consolidate the knowledge and experiences gained throughout the day while encouraging participants to consider how they could contribute to building a more inclusive and accessible society in their own communities.
As a result of these activities, participants developed greater empathy, social awareness, and a stronger commitment to inclusion. The experience demonstrated that understanding, cooperation, and active engagement are essential for creating a future where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can participate fully and equally in society.
