The United Colors for an Inclusive Future Youth Exchange, held in Gijón, Spain, brought together young people from Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Türkiye, Georgia, and Hungary to explore the values of inclusion, equality, and social awareness. Through a variety of educational and interactive activities, participants had the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of social responsibility and learn more about the importance of building inclusive communities.
As part of the programme, participants visited a primary school for children with hearing impairments, where they were introduced to inclusive educational practices and the daily experiences of students. This visit enabled young people to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by individuals with disabilities while increasing their awareness of equal access to education and social participation.
Interactive sessions with the students provided a valuable opportunity to experience different forms of communication. By learning about sign language and alternative communication methods, participants enhanced their communication skills and developed a greater appreciation for accessible and inclusive interaction. The exchange also encouraged meaningful intercultural dialogue, fostering empathy, mutual understanding, and solidarity among participants and students alike.
A cycling activity organized together with the students highlighted the importance of accessibility, active participation, and social inclusion. Through teamwork and shared experiences, participants learned how sports and outdoor activities can bring people together regardless of their backgrounds or abilities. Engagement with the local community also helped spread the project's message and raise awareness about inclusion and equal opportunities.
These activities allowed participants to develop important competencies related to empathy, active citizenship, intercultural understanding, and social responsibility. The experience demonstrated that when people from diverse backgrounds come together, they can contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.
